Newbridge 23 v UWIC 16
Buoyed by our recent new signing’s David Ford and Craig Seldon, we defied the weather conditions to gain an important 23-16 win over visitors UWIC.
A fired up Newbridge pack dominated early proceedings with an early penalty from impressive centre Shaun Thomas. After good work from skipper Rhys Bowen, the ball was moved out swiftly for Shaun Thomas to go over under the posts and he again converted. A further long rang effort from Richard Powell ensured that Newbridge went in front 13-0.
Continuing to dominate in dreadful conditions a superb Tom Edwards break at the base of the scrum resulted in a length of the field try by full back Tom Watkins.
On the stroke of half-time UWIC added an excellent try meaning the game was far from over at 20-7. UWIC who had enjoyed some excellent victories recently started to play conditions well going into the second half. It was no surprise when they added a further try and penalty and the result was in balance going into the last 10 minutes.
Further good work by the back row and the outstanding Martin Ackerman resulted in a further Powell penalty leaving the score at 23-16.
This was an excellent victory against determined visitors and Team Manager Chris Jones was delighted with the victory. He added “this was an excellent team effort from all the boys, and I am pleased that the efforts of Byron and Mark are coming to fruition.”
He added that it was important that we build on this in the coming weeks.
